The classroom classes in the capital for students aged 5 to 11 started on February 14. The return date was announced by Mayor Alexandre Kalil, in a press conference granted on January 26. According to the mayor, the measure was taken so that there was time to the children receive their vaccine against Covid-19. School activities for students over 12 years and under 4 years were authorized in Belo Horizonte.

During the press conference, the municipal health secretary, Jackson Machado Pinto, emphasized that immunization is the most effective measure in combating the disease. “I would like to reinforce the idea that vaccines are absolutely safe and the effectiveness is already proven in reducing the need for hospitalization, both in ward and ICU beds,” he explained.
