Belo Horizonte’s City Hall, through the Health Innovation Group, part of the Municipal Health Secretariat, was awarded first place on the 6th Management for Results and Development Award offered by the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB). The work presented is called “The Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) methodology implantation experience in Belo Horizonte’s public health network”. Among other initiatives from several Latin American and Caribbean countries, it was recognized as the best initiative on the “Strategic Planning: Cities” category. The DRG is a patient classification methodology that separates them according to their assistance complexity, also combining the main diagnostic, comorbidities, age and chirurgical procedures. Among its benefits there are: reduction of patient’s hospitalization, increase on the hospital bed rotation, decrease on the number of readmissions, increase on assistance security, and contraction of the number of potentially avoidable hospitalizations. The implementation of the DRG methodology began in 2017 in seven public hospitals in the capital.
